Paul Cox 16.4.40 – 18.6.16

Paul Cox, liver transplant recipient (2009) has died. Paul a renowned film maker, photographer and artist was well known and much loved by patients and staff of Austin Health.

Paul has made a significant contribution to raising awareness of organ donation including producing the documentary The Dinner Party and feature film Force of Destiny. There wasn’t a film festival, public forum or film launch where he did not reference organ donation, and acknowledge the Austin and his donor. Some of the filming of Force of Destiny occurred at the Austin and involved many patients and staff as extras and was a wonderful experience for all involved. Paul and the crew were very appreciative of the opportunity to film “on site” and for the generosity of Brendan Murphy, Austin CEO in supporting the film.

There is a tribute to Paul in the Age (20th June, page 3), the Australian and many online tributes from around the world. Paul has been described as the “Father of Australian Independent Cinema”, “Australia’s most prolific film auteur” lauded for his warmth, insight, humanity and “artistic purity.”

Paul has two art works hanging in the Olivia Newton John Centre; a painting at the main entrance on level 2 and a photograph near the front desk in Palliative Care.

Paul has left a lasting impression on the film world, the transplant community and Austin Health. He will be greatly missed.

Our sincere condolences to his partner Rosie and children Ezra, Kyra and Marius.
